Understanding the brain and then building intelligent agents

This is regarding the discussion we had in class the other day. Here is a talk by a guy who's trying to do model the brain to help build intelligent agents.

Listening to Jeff Hawkins expound on how human brain works is sort of like reading Wolfram's "A new kind of Science" (check on amazon).

There is a whole lot of serious research on understanding how human brain functions (and using it to develop artificially intelligent agents).

The sort of work in this area that I would recommend is more like
Josh Tenenbaum's stuff
(see http://videolectures.net/icml07_tenenbaum_bmhi/)

or even Tom Dean's recent work
